Camping - November 2006

Home

Photos from my solo camping trip in the Gila along with some miscellaneous home photos.

An oil lamp I made myself.

Making a fool of our dog.

Bud's tired.

This from my journey up Chloride Canyon. It was washed out worse than I'd ever seen it. Other than my pickup, there were only ATV tracks. Very rough. The edge of the creek used to be about 30 feet. The gate you see is in the open position. The "road" is completely gone. I had to drive up the creek itself.

Nice scene on private land north of the turnoff to Lookout Mountain.

First night camp at "City of Rocks II". I slept by the fire with my tarp that has metal in it so my sleeping bag wouldn't burn from the fire embers. This was the peak night for the Leonid meteor shower. Pretty good show, but not nearly as good as 2001. The show in 2001 was spectacular, and only happens every 30 years. The stars were incredible that night, very vivid. Nothing like looking from the city.

This was an intriguing clearing in the mountains that led to a good campsite. This between City of Rocks II and Wall Lake.

The road just north of Wall Lake.

Wall Lake. I used to camp here when the Forest Service leased it from the private owners. Now it's closed. A lot of good memories from this camp area, including floating in a 2 man raft in the middle of the night, fishing.

Can't see too well, but there's a cliff dwelling on this rock.

High point south of Wall Lake.

Someone on the road ahead of me.

Descended to a beautiful valley. In the spring the area is covered with wildflowers.

Another high point.

This, and the following picture is the road going up from Black Canyon. I am currently on the other side descending into Black Canyon.

A view of the campground at Black Canyon.

Black Canyon.

At one of the campsites.

A man-made waterfall.

This taken from the other side while I'm ascending. The road you see is what I came down.

Very good trip. Makes me want to go again!
