| Greece 4
From our hotel.
The famous canal that was constructed by the same fellow that made the Panama Canal. It was attempted by the ancient Greeks and even the Romans without success.
Corinth, mountain fortress/city.
The Lion's Gate at Mycenae, 1200BC. Very well known. This was the city of the "King of Kings", Agamemnon, the one that defeated the Trojans. I've wanted to see this for some time.
Vineyards in the distance.
Mycenae dates to 1200BC, but the dwellings far below are from the Hellenistic period, ~323BC.
The site of Agamemnon's Palace at the top of the hill.
Kylixes at the Mycenaean Museum.
This is the burial chamber of Agamemnon, presumably.
Inside the burial chamber. This was incredible. This is the same principle as the Roman arch, but 360 degrees, and this was made 1200BC as opposed to 100BC for the Romans.
Looking back at Mycenae from the burial chamber. Even in death, Agamemnon could look out over his empire.
This is where we ate lunch after Mycenae. Very good food. In fact we never had a substandard meal the entire trip.
Medieval fortification at the top of the hill.
I'm told this medieval dwelling is now a hotel.
The theatre at Epidaurus. The best preserved ancient stadium in the world. The acoustics was incredible.
The center of the circle for best acoustics.
Epidaurus was dedicated to Asclepius, God of Medical Health, son of Apollo.
The town of Thebes. In ancient times, was a very powerful city/state, that eventually defeated the mighty Spartans.
The mountain town just before you get the Delphi.
Shopping...
Medieval tower.
At Delphi, the treasury of Athens (side view).
The center of the world, according to Greek Mythology. The original is in the museum.
Treasury of Athens, front.
The road the ancients used to get to Delphi to see the Oracle. The Oracle at Delphi was known throughout the ancient world, and was respected, not just among Greeks.
