| Hachita 2005HomeOld Hachita in southern New Mexico, a ghost/mining town, October 2005 ...
These are photos of the mining dwellings of Old Hachita. The actual town site is nearby.
This building, and some others had double walls, kind of a building inside a building, a common practice, with temperatures well over 100 degrees and no air conditioning in those days, this was necessary to protect the building's occupants from the deserts severe heat.
The nest of some large bird in the building.
Tile floor. Must have been one of the elite.
Our campsite, at the base of a current mine operation. Turquoise.
A stick bug.
This was found at the site of the actual town of Old Hachita.
One of the only remnants of the town itself, unlike the mining buildings.
This is the site of the town of Sylvanite. The only thing that remains of the site is a hole. In it's heyday, there were many buildings.
The left is the tent camp of 1908, right is the town in 1909. Photos courtesy U.S. Geological Survey.
A view from a ridge near Sylvanite.
An old ranch house nearby.
The site of the town, and the rockhounds exploring.
Some kind of plant in the distance. Possibly a natural gas plant.
A good size mine.
The rail used to transport the yield out.
A vertical shaft with a rather flimsy ladder.
Dust devil in the distance.
The previous mine from a distance.
